Zombie Exodus is a true text-based apocalypse where you need to make the right choice to stay alive. Forget nice graphics and jump scares – this game relies on the most powerful engine of all: your imagination. If you love a good book, a thrilling story, and the freedom to make choices that actually matter, then you've stumbled upon a real gem, as this game combines them all.

Zombie Exodus isn't a typical zombie shooter, but rather a sprawling, interactive novel where you control the story. The kind of game when you're not just watching the apocalypse unfold; you're living it. You start with a daring escape from a zombie-infested city and end up fighting for survival as hordes of the undead swarm outlying settlements.

Start playing by picking and customizing your character. Choose to be a soldier, an athlete, a carpenter, a minister, or even a scientist and add different kinds of skills or even weaknesses like addictions to make your character deeper. The possibilities are endless, and each playthrough feels different.

But what's it really like to play? Well, imagine a choose-your-own-adventure book on steroids. Every decision you make has consequences, and sometimes those consequences are deadly. One wrong turn, one bad choice, and BAM! You're zombie chow. But don't worry, the game has an auto-save feature to prevent you from losing too much progress. And you'll certainly need those mulligans.

It’s particularly awesome how easy it is to dive headfirst into the story – it's like cracking open a novel, but with the adrenaline rush of making choices that actually change what happens next! And unlike some of those other choose-your-own-adventure games where your decisions feel kinda pointless, in Zombie Exodus, your choices matter. Seriously, what you're carrying, who you decide to trust, and how you act can either open up some sweet opportunities or send you straight to zombie town.

As we’ve already mentioned, the characters can be made surprisingly deep: you can forge friendships, start rivalries, maybe even find love in the apocalypse. They've all got their own backstories and quirks, making them feel like real people… well, as real as you can get when the undead are roaming the streets. As for the replay value, be sure that every moral decision you make will affect the game's ending. With a wide range of various character builds, story paths, and endings, you could play Zombie Exodus forever and still find something new. It's also seriously challenging, but in a good way. You've got to think smart and plan ahead if you want to survive, and that constant threat of death keeps you glued to the screen.

Definitely, no game is perfect, and Zombie Exodus has a few quirks with the biggest gripe being the dreaded paywall. While the first pair of episodes is free, you gotta cough up some cash to unlock the rest of the story, and it's not just one payment,  you gotta buy each chapter separately, which some players feel is a bit of a sneaky move. Additionally, the save system is imperfect, since save points are few and far between, which means you could lose quite a bunch of progress if you bite the dust. You might also feel the game can be a bit too linear at times, forcing you to make particular choices in a certain order.

Despite these criticisms, Zombie Exodus remains a highly popular and well-regarded interactive novel. The writing is excellent, the story is engaging, and the choices are meaningful. If you're a fan of zombies, choose-your-own-adventure games, or just good storytelling, then you should definitely give this game a try. Just be prepared to shell out some cash to unlock the full experience, and don't get too attached to any one character – because in the zombie apocalypse, nobody is safe.
