Pleco is a go-to Chinese dictionary suitable for both complete beginners as well as those trying to refine their fluent Mandarin or Cantonese skills. The app lets you look up words by character, Pinyin with or without tones, or English, and it merges search results from all the dictionaries you have installed. The free dictionaries alone are handy, and if you get the paid add-ons you can unlock serious firepower with specialized dictionaries from Oxford, Longman, Tuttle, and more.

Handwriting input is surprisingly accurate. Even if you’re not super confident in your stroke order, the app can show you exactly how to write thousands of characters. The camera-based OCR is great for flinging your phone at a menu or sign to check what a character means on the spot. For speaking practice, the voice recognition is generally spot on, and it even supports Cantonese.

The flashcard system is also great for committing logographs to memory. You can make flashcards from dictionary entries with a single tap. Advanced memorization modes, fill-in-the-blanks, tone drills, you name it, you can probably configure it in Pleco. There’s also a built-in document reader that lets you tap on words to see translations right away, making reading practice much less daunting.
